Lennington Heppe Shewell

Lennington Shewell (opposite, in the centre), worked for RCA and traveled around the USA demonstrating the theremin. The Shewell family is related to the Heppe Piano Company and Lennie was hired to demonstrate the RCA theremin all over the world. The older gentleman standing behind Lenny is G. Dunbar Shewell, his father, and vice-president of RCA at the time (as well as being a pianist and songwriter).

The picture is part of a film made in the living room of the Shewell family home in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. This must be one of the earliest filmed demonstrations of an RCA theremin and was probably filmed between 1931 and 1932 - approximately two years before Clara Rockmore's 1934 Town Hall debut.
