The Virtual Theremin
Description: The Virtual Theremin aims to mimic the Theremin using just a computer and a cheap web camera. It tracks the hands of a performer, using image processing techniques, around a picture of a Theremin superimposed on the video stream. The positions of the hands are then converted to sound that mimics the response of the Theremin.
The zip file contains 6 files (install.bat, sample.bmp, sample.wav, vt.exe, virtualinstrument.ax, license.html).
Unzip vt.zip.
Double click on install.
You should now have a running copy of vt.exe if all goes well. The Virtual Theremin is beta status.
The files are installed in a folder called VT on your main hard drive (C:VT ).
Minimum requirements
128MB RAM (the program requires 90MB).
A Web Camera.
DirectX 8.0 or greater.

Pocket Clanger Theremin
Description:
With a real Theremin, the user is able to create music by simply moving a hand in the proximity of a radio aerial, this movement effects the tuning of an electrical oscillator circuit, and thus music can be played with nothing more than gestures of the hand.
A PocketPC doesn't include the means to replicate the radio circuitry capable of detecting the presence of a hand, but it does include a CPU powerful enough to synthesize the analogue circuitry within a theremins sound generation stage.
The Pocket Clanger Theremin is controlled by moving your stylus/finger around on the multicoloured pad with the picture of the Clanger on it:
Moving horizontally will cause the frequency (pitch) to change.
Moving vertically will cause the amplitude (volume) to change.
With skill and practice there's no reason why you can't become a virtuoso on this peculiar instrument.

Theremini emulates a theremin using the speaker in Palm devices or by sending out MIDI messages to control external hardware.
While the built-in speaker leaves a bit to be desired, it can be useful for doodling and special effects.
Of more importance is the MIDI output. The messages sent are very configurable.
This is the first realtime MIDI controller for PalmOS, with more features than the Korg KAOS PAD controller.
Theremini is shareware and costs only $10.
