Percy Grainger heard his 'Free Music' in his head from his childhood, and spent most of his life trying to recreate it using a number of devices and instruments. Free Music No.1 is Grainger's first attempt at creating the unique sound of his Free Music using a quartet of theremins. Unfortunately, Grainger found that the thereminists of the time were insufficiently accomplished performers to recreate authentically the sounds he heard in his head.

It was only upon the release of this recording that Grainger's Free Music No. 1 was at last realised authentically.
