The theremin is huge in Japan, and that seems to be largely the result of the efforts of one person - Masami Takeuchi. Masami Takeuchi is not only the most popular and well known theremin player in Japan, but he has almost single handedly introduced and popularised the theremin across the nation.
He studied theremin under Lydia Kavina, has published a biography of Leon Theremin, Released two CDs, a theremin method book, has taught over four hundred theremin students, and sold over 1,600 'Matromin' instruments, which are essentially the pitch portion of the theremin encased in a russian doll shaped exterior.
